Call for Paper Proposals for Gendering EU Crises panel at the European
Community Studies Association - Canada, to be held in Montreal, 8-10 May
2014.

Panel organized by:
Heather MacRae (Political Science, York University) Elaine Weiner
(Sociology, McGill University)

Proposed Panel:
The European Union has long been viewed as a forerunner in promoting gender
equality. Notably, in recent years, the EU's focus on gender equality has
broadened to address multiple forms of discrimination, again highlighting
that the European Union and its institutions are among the leaders in
promoting an equitable society. However, as a number of feminist scholars
have pointed out, the EU's broader policy goals can, at times, be at odds
with its equalizing aims. This clash is particularly manifest in the
current context of austerity measures and welfare state retrenchment. To
this end, we propose to explore the reconcilability of the EU's equality
policies with other policy recourses aimed at assuaging the current
economic and demographic crises.

We are particularly interested in papers that consider:
* the implications of welfare state restructuring on gender equality and/or
other forms of equality;
* the clash of gendered (and not) norms and values between/among the EU and
its member states;
* the extent to which gender mainstreaming has been brought into
discussions about how to response to these crises;

To indicate your interest in participating in this panel, please submit an
abstract of your paper proposal to Heather MacRae (hmacrae@???) no
later than Tuesday, Nov. 19th, 2013.

Students and Post-docs: please note that ECSA-C has made up to 30 travel
grants available for you to participate in the conference. If you are
eligible, we encourage you to apply for a travel grant as well.
