Also this year we are participating, together with Freifunk, to the Google Summer of Code.
The GSoC pays a decent amount of money [1] to a "student" (can be anyone, no need to be a student) for working with some open source organizations.
Additionally, GSoC also gives some money to the mentors, and traditionally Freifunk and LibreMesh mentors give these money to Freifunk and to LibreMesh as donations.
In the case of LibreMesh, we used this money, together with the other donations on OpenCollective [2] for funding two testing grants that greatly helped porting LibreMesh to OpenWrt 23.05 and making the new release.
A good example from 2024's GSoC is Henrique's project about updating the Pirania token-based captive portal. Henrique's code already got merged [3].
The official coding period is from June to August, and applying you commit to write 3 blog posts on Freifunk's blog [4] and to upload somewhere the code you wrote.
You can apply with your own project idea (e.g. I will rewrite LibreMesh in ucode) or take an idea from the ones proposed here [5].
Then you will have to make a PDF with the project idea and apply here [6].
The application deadline is on the 8th of April and the funded projects will be announced on the 8th of May [7].
