Hi battlemesh list,
Besides community network activities, I'm a member of a non-profit
association called Deuxfleurs [1] and we develop cool software to
facilitate self-hosting. We encourage something we call
"entre-hébergement" in French (rough translation: "together-hosting",
which means managing a small distributed hosting infrastructure as group).
I guess this approach could make sense in a community network context.
The main software we develop is Garage:
https://garagehq.deuxfleurs.fr/
It's a self-hosted object storage system that can replicate data over
low-quality network links and still manage consistency when
reading/writing. It can be used as a backend for Nextcloud, for media
files for Mastodon or Matrix, to host websites...
We are looking for a PhD student to work on the distributed algorithms
behind Garage and to implement improved algorithms. The funding is for
three years in France.
More details and links here:

The deadline is 31st January, and the PhD will start in September 2024.
Regards,
Baptiste
