I plan to be in Torino for the HM days, I can translate from/to
IT-FR-EN-ES (good into Italian from all, good into french;
understandable with some effort into EN-ES)
I'm available also to help with the Programma translation
In my experience, for a workshop/talk given into e.g. Italian, for
non-Italian speaker, the easiest choice is to set up a group in which
the translator listen to the speaker and report to the "aside" group.
Subgroups can be setup for any language, e.g. IT>FR etc. An effective
consecutive translation, not simultaneous, implies that the speaker is
aware and leave the room for translations - timing, expression as clear
as possible, less recourse to irony/sarcasm or at least underlining it,
limited use of idioms that are more difficult to translate, etc.
on top of that, and maybe even preferably, sometimes works also the
graphic thing, I mean, to have someone translating (visualising) into
graphic and/or written words the talk/workshop. Writing board (old
posters, etc.) with markers are needed - to be placed in a visible
manner to all
BTW this could also help in improving inclusiveness. Sometimes spoken
words are overrated.
