US Hands off Cuba

Statement by the United National Antiwar Coalition

[Pro-cuba protest]

This is a picture of a pro-government protest in Cuba that the corporate media said was antigovernmental

Cuba, a small island with a population of only 11 million people and few resources has been the target of US imperialism since its revolution in 1959. It has been subject to invasions such as that at the Bay of Pigs, many assassination attempts of Fidel Castro, and the US has imposed a crippling blockade for years. However, under the Trump and Biden administrations these attacks have been stepped-up. Trump greatly increased the sanctions against Cuba and labeled it as a terrorist country. This further hindered its ability to trade with other countries as banks and markets were closed to Cuba causing severe shortages and hardships for the Cuban people. The Biden administration maintained these increased sanctions and the terrorist label and is trying to organize demonstrations against the Cuban government based on dissatisfaction with the shortages. This is especially criminal during the COVID-19 crisis, during which the US sanctions have not allow medicine or medical equipment into the country. As COP26 met in Scotland during this year of extreme weather due to climate change, it is more important than ever that the Climate Change and Antiwar movements work together to end these threats to humankind. This important webinar helped make some of these connections and explained the danger of the new US initiated arms race in space.

Speakers included:
Dave Webb (UK) – Board chair of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space and current chair of UK's Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), Koohan Paik-Mander - a Hawaii-based journalist and media educator. She is a board member of the Global Network and the CODEPINK working group "China is Not Our Enemy." She formerly served as campaign director of the Asia-Pacific program at the International Forum on Globalization,
Bruce Gagnon -Coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space

The Ethiopian American Civic Council, Ethiopian and Eritrean Americans, and the Sanctions Kill Coalition present a webinar on the damage that US sanctions will inflict on Ethiopia and Eritrea.

The Biden administration is fully aware that harsh sanctions will primarily hurt the poor, but it has already sanctioned Eritrea and will all but certainly sanction Ethiopia in January. We will dig deep into the context of this aggression and discuss how we can resist with advocacy and action. Join us!

US Hands off Nicaragua

Days after Daniel Ortega won the election in Nicaragua with more than 75% of the vote, The Biden administration signed the RENACER Act. Among other things, the RENACER act directs US representatives at international financial institutions to advocate against loans and financial or technical assistance for Nicaragua. As with other sanctions, these are designed to hurt the people of Nicaragua and encourage them to oppose their government. In the inverted logic of the US government, elections are not democratic but imposing the will of Washington through sanctions is.

Below is an article in Black Agenda Report from Margaret Kimberley who is a member of the UNAC administrative committee and was in Nicaragua to observe the elections as part of a delegation of the Black Alliance for Peace.

US Threatens Regime Change in Nicaragua

Voters in line during 2021 Presidential Election in Nicaragua

Nicaragua has been a target of U.S. aggressions since the 1850s. The Biden administration’s attack on the newly elected government is the latest chapter in a long and sordid history. Eyewitness accounts of the electoral process reveal the manipulations and lies concocted by the U.S. and its corporate media partners in this latest regime change effort.
