All PHP services are better than third party cloud services. Because you
gain control, and because you have strategies to mitigate that PHP
problem. You can protect that services if they are only accessible
through a self-hosted VPN. It's even more secure if the access is
through a tor hidden service. And even more secure if you restrict
access from untrusted/infected devices/people: android, windows,
transgenic apple, etc.
So you have a lot of degrees to control it. Have fun.
The problem is when you think that after using a specific solution you
are free of privacy / security issues. Nah. You still have to ask
yourself regularly who you are trusting (don't loose that right, or
recover it). Security involves strong self-discipline, self-control. So
expect not being the weak, and help the others to be stronger.
So we can think about it as a stair, and every step you go up it's
"better" (but probably painful).
And of course, apply appropriate security according to what you need.
