Subject: [Tails-ux] Missing Tooltips [was: Some criticism about the 2.0 beta]
Hi,

Moving this from tails-testers list :)

-

Tooltips are important, as they can help to better understand the
purpose of the elements in an interface.

In Tails 2.0 (Debian Jessie), there appear to be no tooltips [from
tester]:

[I've clicked on about 50 icons where I had no idea what it would do and
there was no
mouseover text either...yeah that's annoying]

After some investigation, it seems that GNOME 3 has done away with
tooltips:

GNOME 2
https://developer.gnome.org/hig-book/unstable/toolbars.html.en

GNOME 3
https://developer.gnome.org/hig/stable/toolbars.html.en

In fact, the only mention of "tooltip" in GNOME's stable documentation
seems to be in:
https://developer.gnome.org/hig/stable/keyboard-input.html.en

I found these that seem to address the issue:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=755185
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=759922

And chatted on #gnome-shell IRC to discover [from others]:

[not too many things use tooltips these days. But they're there!]

[it depends on if that app is set up that way. I know evince has
tooltips for its toolbar icons]

[the shell itself has "tooltips" only on the dash icons]

So, this should be resolvable by adding tooltips; Alan, what do you
think?

Spencer
