Dear all,

the second event of the Social Movements and Media Technologies: Present Challenges and Future Developments Seminar Series is fast approaching!

The Seminar Series is sponsored by the ESRC and jointly organised by the Centre for Global Media and Democracy (CGMD) at Goldsmiths University of London and the Centre on Social Movement Studies (COSMOS), Scuola Normale Superiore and European University Institute, in Florence.

The aim of the series, which will take place in 2015 and 2016 for a total of six seminars, is to tackle and critically understand one of the crucial societal changes of our times: the relationship between political participation and media technologies.

The second seminar Visibilities: Social Protest, ‘The Media’, and the Shaping of Public Opinion will be held at the Centre on Social Movement Studies, Scuola Normale Superiore, Firenze, Italy 3rd and 4th of September, 2015 (Palazzo Strozzi, Altana e Aula Simone del Pollaiolo)

In this second seminar we will focus on the complex relationship between social conflict, mainstream media and the construction of public opinion. The rapid extension in use of Web 2.0 technologies has transformed the way in which social movements mobilise and organise, yet critical questions need to be addressed on the extent to which social movements are able to achieve visibility for their political messages and on the continuing role mainstream media play in the shaping of public opinion. This seminar will engage with these questions by looking at different albeit interconnected dimensions a) activists’ mediated tactics and media appropriation b) alternative media and the struggle for visibility) mainstream media and the shaping of public opinion.

The Keynote speaker will be Professor Des Freedman, Goldsmiths University of London with a talk on “A Return to Prime Time Activism: Social Movement Theory and Media Reform”.
