setting odd keymaps in kernel cmdline or similar oddities to make sure
it is resilient enough?

Ok, I've started building [1] which will contain both the new
freepto-usb-utils and the keymap fix.
This way you can test the whole workflow:
* put freepto on usb stick with `dd`
* run
* create persistence from the gui, setting a password with "strange"
characters
* reboot
* insert password
* change password from the password changer, reboot again and re-test
