O Ecobytes formou-se recentemente como associação e procuramos
construir uma base de membros apoiantes capaz de suportar pelo
menos os custos de aluguer do equipamento e, em perspectiva, a
gestão e desenvolvimento.
Seria importante que o Indymedia, enquanto colectivo, ou algum
(alguns) de vós se fizessem membros e listassem o site, de forma a
conseguirmos uma estrutura de funcionamento mais clara.
Estou certo que conseguem entre vós angariar 60 €/ano (5 €/mês)
para o alojamento. Contudo, se tal for impossível, escrevam
simplesmente isso nos additional remarks do formulário de
aplicação - apesar de estarmos um pouco mais restritos a pedir a
associação - porque os custos de alojar dezenas de sites
gratuitamente nos estão a rebentar as costuras, dificultar a
gestão e a colocar em risco todo o projecto -, não queremos deixar
de apoiar colectivos e projectos que não o podem fazer.
Então, vejam lá o que é possível e inscrevam-se, como indíviduos
ou colectivo, no Ecobytes.

Ecobytes has been recently established as a non-profit organisation
(e.V. for eingetragene Verein, in Germany). We want with this new form
to make clearer our commitment to the community and the development of a
service of public interest, as well as increase the transparency and
structure of our work.

We also want to more effectively engage in and develop projects for the
ideas and social movements towards a more just and ecological society.
For this purpose, we are joining in international partnerships with
other IT collectives, agroecological initiatives (particularly
community-supported agriculture), commons and degrowth projects.
We are a growing community, fond of providing you a safe, sustainable,
personal server, built from the least environmentally harmful parts and
powered entirely by renewable energy. We provide secure data-storing
from political groups, citizens, activists, artists and small entities,
in order to perform in pure privacy, making sure your domain
informations will be encrypted.
With our work, we envision to become a resource for knowledge about
environmentally sound and socially just computing, but also a part of
movements for social change, by providing hosting based on solidarity
economy principles and supporting Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS).
After a few years of what we can call "emergency management" to keep the
servers, your websites and e-mails running, we are now advancing with
our project.In this transition phase, where we need to put a lot of work
in cleaning up the past years mess, build up a new team and start new
projects, we face a particularly difficult phase in terms of paying our
running costs. Some of us have been injecting money to assure that the
servers are not disconnected, but we can't support this situation much
longer.
In the last year, we have been intensively developing the co-munity
platform, together with other organisations and movements of
agroecology, transition and degrowth. This platform offers you and your
organisations the possibility to organize documents, use etherpads,
participate in discussions, create image galleries, etc.. We are also
proud to be providing this platform service to two large projects on
degrowth: GROWL (
http://co-munity.net/growl), and the 4th international
degrowth conference (
http://leipzig.degrowth.org), of which we are partners.
Further functions are being added to this platformand, soon, you will be
able use a CRM, manage your mails, get a new domain, do a Wordpress or
Drupal installation with only a few clicks in the Ecobytes community.
How it works:
As an association, to continue supporting us, you are requested to
become a member of this association.
The standard cost of a membership is 60 €/year. If you can't afford
this, then you can write to info@??? and ask for a lower
membership payment (and if you can more, please consider donating!).
After you registered you will get an invoice and as soon as you paid you
will be able to have access to member and community area, where you can
add and safeguard your domains.
As a member of Ecobytes, you have right to the hosting space that you
have been used to in the past. We give to each member 10 Gb server
space that you can use as you want: websites, but also for e-mails,
web applications and file storage.
With the membership you can use and take part in decision-making
processes related to the Ecobytes virtual ecosystem. If you are having
troubles proceeding with your website or have specific needs (e.g.
require technical assistance for installation, web development, etc.),
contact our team, but be aware that any extra service is charged at a
standard hourly rate of 40€.

_Donations:_
As a not-for-profit organisation with recognized public interest,
Ecobytes e.V. is open for your donations, which can also be tax-deducted.
We are not asking/charging for past payments, but would like to ask you
to make an estimation of how much you would like to donate to pay for
past services, when you register as a member. Simply estimate the value
of your last years hosting (remember, basic hosting was 48 €/year, each
domain 12 €/year) and what you can pay for it.
The more dedicated our members are to the concept of our cooperative and
the more of you donate, the faster our project is going to develop and
offer you new, better and more secure services!
_Expiration of old services:_
We decided to expire automatically all domains and hostings that do not
belong to a member of the new Ecobytes association by August 15th 2014.
All files of disabled domains will be stored until December 30th 2014
and then permanently deleted.
Although we tried to avoid this cut, it's our only viable possibility
for us to progressively restore an high quality of service and keep
track and support of people who we host. Our account is very unbalanced
now, with too much costs going for domains that are not being paid, and
to a large extent, we suspect, not even being used. We need to get rid
of all unnecessary costs if we want to assure the sustainability of
Ecobytes.
We hope you will want to continue supporting Ecobytes and the new
planned developments, from which you will hear more about soon and, as a
member, also be able to decide upon.
