At one point I heard the largest per capita protest in the world to date (at the time) was in Chile in October 1988 when many social movements united under the NO campaign against the dictatorship. I lived and worked there at the time and participated and understood it was well-measured at over 1 million marchers or about 9% of the national population (a much higher percentage of the capital city population). Count is of course difficult especially when there is threat/violence (very little that day), but Chile was/is rich in social scientists and they continue to measure/monitor social movement participation. For those interested in long-term measurement and movement transformation, Chile is a rich place to learn from.

While awareness of global protests is faciliated by the growth of the intenet, social networking and things like livestream, the actual level of global protest has to be scientifically measured. Has anyone done this? I'm not sure if it would be possible as many events aren't covered by the english media (ex. knowing what is going on in China, especially historically, would take a large team of researchers).

I'd guess that global protest levels have been relatively constant (per capita) throughout the past forty years. It is only when you apply a personal bias (like a focus on a specific country, or if you have a newly found interest in tracking other countries, or are new to activism) that you come up with this idea that protests are increasing.

How can you compare the Arab Spring to the Tianneman Square movement (which almost lead to democracy / or major reform in the most populous country in the world), or the mass social movements that overthrew the dictatorships of Eastern Europe?

When I first got on email in 1994, I subscribed to the Weekly News Update on the Americas (by the Nicaraguan Solidarity Network in NYC) and was amazed about how much was going on in Latin America.

General strikes aren't that rare (there are lots of one day general strikes). Unlimited general strikes are rare...

Also, being part of Occupy Tampa...I would have to agree with Tristian Lear (hi ;) ). A lot of the various protests we are seeing across the country (and even the world like examples of Turkey and Brazil) have some affiliation with people who participated in Arab Spring, Puerta del Sol, or Occupy. It seems that we are starting to find other people around the world to work with. For example, in Rome, Italy right now there are an estimated 60,000 people marching in a general strike. Last night they set up tents (just like in Puerta del Sol) in Rome. We can instantly connect with people on the ground in Rome through twitter, facebook, and livestream.

If you think of all the allied movements and protests going on across the world, global protests have expanded rapidly. Just look at www.facebook.com/revnews<http://www.facebook.com/revnews> --- literally, every day there are clashes with police in the streets around the world. I think too often we focus on a narrow "US-based Occupy movement" when we should really open our eyes and look at what is happening across the world --- people are building collective co-operatives, huge boom in citizen media, direct democracy/consensus is being used much more, many social centers/squats are being built, several major general strikes this past year...etc, etc, etc.

I participate/d in Occupy Toledo and Occupy Tampa. It seems to me that
since the movement didn't really have "membership cards," that I found it
best to refer to myself, when asked once by the local media, as a
"participant." This lack of essential membership status I think did us a
lot of good in the long run, because when you get language out of the way,
it looks to me like what we once considered Occupy Tampa "working groups"
have transformed into several loose knit mutually affiliated autonomous
groups with a lot of overlapping participation. For example, I would
include all these as catalyzed by OT:

Tampa IWW
Tampa Food Not Bombs
Tampa Chelsea Manning Support Group
Tampa March Against Monsanto
Tampa Solidarity Network
Tampa Light Brigade

http://wearepcaps.org/ - coalition - first time the public schools
movement in Philly has reached out beyond the teachers union to form an
official coalition with other groups.

http://www.tagphilly.org/ - Teacher Action Group - more activist than
the union leadership

http://thenotebook.org/ - independent media that focuses on schools

It's a pretty big movement. Teachers are close to striking even though
striking has been made illegal (they risk losing their certification to
teach if they strike). They're now working without a contract. A child
died recently from an asthma attack, probably due to a lack of a school
nurse. There were weekly demonstrations for a while. The state took
over the school board around 2001/2002 - replacing elected reps with
appointees and started the privatization process. The unelected school
board is trying to rollback wages and increase hours (mostly because the
state is forcing them to cut spending).

Hello everyone,

Thank you so much for all of your responses. My finalized survey will not
be approved until a couple of weeks from now at least (administrative
requirements of my institution). But, when it does, I will try all of
these avenues. You are a great help.

Aloha and mahalo,
Katie
