http://wearepcaps.org/ - coalition - first time the public schools
movement in Philly has reached out beyond the teachers union to form an
official coalition with other groups.

http://www.tagphilly.org/ - Teacher Action Group - more activist than
the union leadership

http://thenotebook.org/ - independent media that focuses on schools

It's a pretty big movement. Teachers are close to striking even though
striking has been made illegal (they risk losing their certification to
teach if they strike). They're now working without a contract. A child
died recently from an asthma attack, probably due to a lack of a school
nurse. There were weekly demonstrations for a while. The state took
over the school board around 2001/2002 - replacing elected reps with
appointees and started the privatization process. The unelected school
board is trying to rollback wages and increase hours (mostly because the
state is forcing them to cut spending).
