Thanks for the detailed response.
I've actually changed my system to Debian Wheezy pretty much the day after
I wrote that email (I'm not one of those constant distro switching guys,
but had just gotten fed up with all the cruft showing up in Ubuntu desktop
distro and UI changes in GNOME3 were driving me crazy).
This weekend I will re-try the vagrant procedure on the new system with the
extra info you guys have generously provided and report my findings back.
