Hi,
we have not been doing a good work at supporting other protocols than
IRC and XMPP with Pidgin in Tails. E.g. MSN has been known broken for
years, and not much happened on this front since then. We're also
receiving reports of other protocols being broken, and we lack energy
to investigate.
I'd rather see us slightly limit the scope of what we're trying to
achieve, and do it better.
So, I hereby propose:
(1) We immediately stop supporting protocols other than IRC and XMPP
with Pidgin in Tails. This means we *remove* from Tails the shared
libraries that implement these protocols.
(2) From now on, we apply the following conditions to add a new
protocol back:
a) someone volunteers to maintain the corresponding support in
Tails on the long term;
b) it's been successfully tested in Tails;
c) someone has verified that its security record (including open
bugs in the Pidgin BTS) does not seem too scary.
Deadline if nobody objects: July 1st at noon CEST.
Cheers,
