Dear all,

we are glad to announce that the website of COSMOS - Centre on Social Movement Studies is online.

Directed by Prof. Donatella della Porta, COSMOS is a vibrant community of scholars from all over Europe, and beyond, based at the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute. COSMOS focuses on social movements as part of broader contentious politics. It promotes theoretically-driven empirical analyses on forms, dimensions, causes and impacts of social movements, in established democracies as well as authoritarian regimes. Particular attention is given to social movements as promoters of democratization processes. COSMOS organises seminars, workshops, and lectures on social movements and contentious politics on a regular basis. The aim is to develop and disseminate knowledge on social movements and contentious politics in Europe and beyond.
Apart from the individual research projects of Phd students and Research Fellows, COSMOS is currently involved in three major research endeavors. Mobilizing for Democracy is a project funded by the European Research Council, that addresses the role of civil society organizations in democratization processes, bridging social science approaches to social movements and democracy. In the framework of the ANTICORRP project, funded by the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Program, the Centre on Social Movement Studies is developing a study on the role of social movements and civil society actors against corruption and organized crime. Contextualizing Contestation: Caught in the Act of Protest is a cross-national comparative research financed by the European Science Foundation, that focuses on protest demonstrations to understand who participates in protest, for what reason, and how they are mobilised.

You can visit the COSMOS website to know more about our research, events, and publications.

Best,

Alice
