Especially bug reports are most welcome before Monday, the 11th of June,
as the release is planned on Tuesday, the 12th of June. So why not spend
your weekend testing Tails? :)
Tails 0.12-rc1 has two big new features:
* The Unsafe Browser. Like its name implies, is not safe, and in Tails'
context that means no anonymity. All its connection are made in the
clear, and it uses the DHCP provided (or manually configured through
NetworkManager) DNS server. The only reason for us to include this
is to make Tails usable with Internet connections that require
login/registration (i.e. that has captive portals) which is common for
publicly available connections usually found at Internet cafés,
libraries etc.
It can be started via: Applications -> Internet -> Unsafe Web Browser
and its documentation can be found on the locally included version of
Tails website (the "Tails documentation" icon on the desktop ) via:
Documentation -> First steps with Tails -> Logging in to captive
portals.
* Windows camouflage mode. Tails' user interface is unfamiliar to most,
which may attract unwanted attention when used in public places. This
option makes Tails look more like Microsoft Windows XP. Actually this
has been around as an experimental feature for quite a few releases,
although it has been hidden (it could only be enabled on the kernel
cmdline). Now we feel like its ready for prime time use, and so it
can easily be enabled via a checkbox in Tails Greeter during boot.
Furthermore, since this is the first release since Tails 0.11, which
introduced the Tails USB installer (and updater) it'd also be nice to
have some in the wild testing of "Clone & Upgrade":s from Tails 0.11 USB
installs to Tails 0.12-rc1. If your Tails 0.11 USB install also has a
persistent partition (as setup with the Tails provided tool) that's even
better (although you may want to backup any important data on different
media just to stay safe).
