Subject: [Tails-dev] Remove cryptkeeper?
Hi,

a few good reasons to remove cryptkeeper (and encfs) have been posted
on https://tails.boum.org/todo/remove_cryptkeeper/

The only Tails usecase where I know cryptkeeper has been useful, and
which is not covered by LUKS, and the only reason I know of to ship
cryptkeeper at all, is that it makes it possible (not really easy, but
still) to send an encrypted folder over the Internet, in the form of
an archive of the EncFS encrypted folder.

Given we can't know for sure how Tails users use cryptkeeper, let's
say we would like to deprecate it in Tails, how do we do? I guess we
have to ship a wrapper around cryptkeeper in two major releases, that
announce cryptkeeper will disappear soon, and ask users to either
migrate their data, or convince us it's really strongly needed.
Looks like we should do this for the encfs command-line
application too.

Meta: anonym, will you take care of bringing this discussion and/or
the resulting action plan to an end?

Cheers,
