The concept of "populism" is increasingly the focus of attention of
social
scientists and politicians. Political leaders and populist movements
are
linked by a constant reminder of the virtues of democracy but analysts
agree that populism itself represents a form of degeneration of the
democratic process.
The phenomenon can be interpreted through multiple perspectives and it
is
often associated with the analytically similar concept of
anti-politics.
Populist parties and movements generally identify the target of their
claims in professional politics. Sometimes it assumes the features of
the
critical movements opposed to globalization, or those xenophobic of
the
movements who oppose the immigration process.
Populism is almost always marked by forms of "neocaesarism" which can
lead
to authoritarianism and can assume the ideological views of a radical
Manichaeism.
In any case, it is closely linked to major socio-political events of
recent decades: the process of globalization, the media coverage of
political life, the weakening of the welfare state, the crisis of
traditional values and of social factors of identity, the crisis of
the
so-called great ideologies.
Inside the panel, contributions focused on the analysis of populism
into
a
perspective that emphasizes the practices of political participation
are
welcome. Leftist or right-wing parties, political leaders and social
movements, in Europe as in other continents, may be of concern.
Both theoretical contributions aimed to further clarify the logical
and
methodological connection between populism and participation, and
empirical contributions that analyze the phenomenon in a comparative
or
historical perspective will be welcome.
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
In order to be taken into consideration, proposals (that can be
submitted
either in English or Italian) should include Name, Institutional
affiliation and contacts of the proponent as well as a working title
and
a
short abstract of up to 250 words.
- Proposals must be sent to panel chairs by May 1st, 2012.
- A decision about which contributions to include in the panel will be
made by May 28th, 2012 at the latest.
- In order to grant quality of discussion, all papers should be
circulated
by email by September 2nd 2012 and published on the SISP website.
- Final Papers should not exceed 60.000 characters (spaces, notes and
references included).
