Temat: [movimenti.bicocca] Call for Papers - Social movements and the crisis: between innovation and continuity (SISP conference 13-15 Sep. 2012)
>
> Annual conference of the Italian Political Science Association (www.sisp.it)
> University of Roma Tre, 13-15 September 2012
>
> Section: Political participation and social Movements
> Panel: Social movements and the crisis: between innovation and continuity
> Chairs: Donatella della Porta (donatella.dellaporta@???) and Lorenzo Mosca (lorenzo.mosca@???)
>
> Abstract: This panel will focus on different forms of protest by a constellation of actors (unions, students, precarious workers, indignados etc.) which have recently mobilized against the economic crisis and the drastic solutions imposed by technical governments.
>
> In our panel we will consider different aspects of these new wave of mobilization such as:
>
> a) Forms of organization and democracy – we want to understand how these groups organize, how they make decisions, how they grant individual participation in large public assemblies.
>
> b) Framing – we aim at shedding light on how these groups present themselves, their targets, their perception of the crisis and the solutions they propose in order to change a situation they see as unjust. We are also interested on how these movements perceive the European Union and its institutions and along which lines they think they should be reformed.
>
> c) Repertoire of action – we want to map different forms of action adopted by these groups as well as understanding the meaning of specific actions, also in relation with the issue of violence and with media coverage.
>
> d) Forms of communication – we aim at understanding how these groups incorporate in their everyday life social networking tools and internet opportunities, how they interact with the media system and how they deal with digital inequalities.
>
> Organizational strategies, narratives, forms of action and communication tend to travel across countries. Through a focus on diffusion processes we want to understand how these groups import and export symbols, ideas and strategies from other countries and how do they adapt them to the cultural, social and political characteristics of their country.
>
> Moreover, we are interested in discussing how the new forms of protest (both offline and online) challenge classical theories of social movement studies (i.e. resource mobilization).
>
> Finally, we aim at identifying the key aspects of this new wave of mobilization, detecting continuities and discontinuities with previous movements.
