I fixed the non-existing function bug (fix pushed).
About your addition of Emacs -specific encoding header, I'm unsure.
Why is this needed at all?
In any case, putting this change in the same commit as a change that
fixes a critical bug guarantees our branches diverge more and more.

Please test latest package snapshot (commit 5c5aaf).
If you really want to try current master head, then please use the
updated one, with the bugfix in, I just pushed (commit d1dc1c).
