Did you try the recipe [0] documented on our wiki with Tails 0.7~rc1?
This release candidate ships with a live-boot that is supposed to have
the needed fixes in it.

AFAIK a few people have been using it successfully with Tails images
built with recent live-boot snapshots. Can anyone confirm they have it
working with 0.7~rc1?

Please enlighten me: what upstream patches are you talking of?

Just to be clear: GRML is not that "more recent", it only applies a
few custom patches on top of upstream Debian Live tools. These patches
unfortunately have not reached the upstream codebase yet. A useful
thing to do, for whovere wanting to help on this front, would be to
contribute pushing these patches upstream if they need it in Tails.
