MebanEspress Celebrates Columbus Day and Italian American Heritage Month Saturday October 16
MebanEspress, Alamance County's only authentic Italian espresso bar, will celebrate Columbus Day and Italian American Heritage Month with an all-Italian musical program Saturday October 16.
In addition to the MebanEspress's usual selection of high quality gelatos, Italian ices, home made biscotti and cakes, and specialty coffees and teas, the day will feature an evening concert of Italian language songs by Larry Vellani beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Larry is the co-founder of the musical ensemble Mebanesville and has performed traditional and contemporary Italian songs in restaurants, cafes and concert stages throughout the Triad and Triangle.
MebanEspress is located at 109 North Fourth Street in downtown Mebane.
As early as 1792, the 300th anniversary of Columbus landing in the Bahamas in October 1492, civic leaders in the United States began using the narrative of "Columbus the Great Navigator" to promote patriotic values and to build a new American identity, distinct from the roots most residents had in Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. This perspective led to the use of Columbus's name in the founding of many new communities in the new republic, e.g. Columbus, Ohio and Columbus, Georgia, as well as the derivative term, Columbia.
Italians and Americans of Italian descent first held special public demonstrations of cultural pride on October 12, 1866 in New York City as a part of Columbus Day celebrations. San Francisco claims the nation's oldest annual observance since 1868 with the Italian American community's Columbus Day Parade.

On October 28, Larry returns to the local cafe scene with a concert at Dick and Jane's Tapas and Martini Bar at 109 West Clay Street in downtown Mebane in a program of traditional and contemporary North American song beginning at 7:30 p.m.
