The chair Social Conflict & Change (SCC) within the Sociology department
at the Faculty of Social Sciences of VU University Amsterdam has a
vacancy for a PostDoc position.
Positioning
/Fighting at the Fault lines of Society/ is a project funded by the NWO
within the Conflict and Security Program. The central question of the
project reads: Why do people protest (or not) and by which organizations
are they mobilised (or not), and how does that relate to cleavages
socio-political conflicts reflect? This project examines street
demonstrations through the lens of cleavage theory. The PostDoc will
exploit a dataset to be accumulated in the course of an ESF-funded
project (08-ESF-001,
www.protestsurvey.eu) ‘Caught in the act of
protest. Contextualizing Contestation (CCC)’. This multilevel dataset
aims to collect data of 100 demonstrations in 7 countries encompassing
information on mobilizing actors, participants, and socio-political
context. Being the largest multilevel database ever accumulated on
protest participation it offers a unique opportunity to analyse various
levels of conflicts. The specific objective of this PostDoc project is
to employ the overall design by developing and testing a multilevel
theoretical framework on protest participation.
The Social Conflict and Change cluster within the Sociology department
at VU University will be the setting of the Postdoc. S/he is embedded in
an inspiring and strong research group of 19 researchers headed by
Professor Bert Klandermans and staffed by among others Jacquelien van
Stekelenburg and 11 PhDs, 6 of whom are supervised by Klandermans/Van
Stekelenburg. The Postdoc will also participate in the CCC team. This
team pools interdisciplinary renowned experts, consisting of social
psychologists, political scientists, and sociologists.

*Profile*
We are looking for a candidate with a PhD in social sciences who can
start January the 1^st 2011 at the latest. Note that NWO requires that
the candidate has defended his/her dissertation before this date. The
PostDoc should have a strong scientific track record, preferably a
demonstrable interest in social movements, political protest and protest
participation and is experienced in quantitative research methods
(preferably Multi-level Analyses). Because of the multi-disciplinary
character of the group, we expect the candidates to be open-minded about
different theoretical and methodological approaches and to be interested
in working in a group of people from different disciplines.
*Tasks*
· To develop and test a multilevel theoretical framework on protest
participation, leading to publications in international journals;
· Participate in coordinating tasks in the management of the CCC project;
· Participate in co-supervision of PhD students.

A contract of employment is offered initially for a period of one year.
Satisfactory performance is subject to an appointment for another year.

*Salary*
The salary amounts to € 2.923,= gross (scale 10.5) to € 3.755,= gross
(maximum scale 10) a month depending on experience, based on full-time
employment.
