Sternfahrt ('star ride') happens in Berlin every year. In the form of
a star, cyclists from all over Berlin merge together from the
periphery into the centre of the city at the Brandenburg Gate.
Safety is the theme this year.
The route from Wannsee which is shown on this video travels along the
autobahn and through the streets of Charlottenburg.
The experience of cycling on an autobahn is amazing. A bike can reach
its true potential as a means of transport. The surface is smooth,
fast bikes can overtake slow ones and without cars a feeling safety
and comfort is achieved. This autobahn passes through the forest, the
Gruenewald.
When the thousands of cyclist arrived in normal city streets, the
change in air quality was immediately noticeable. The active people
have to suck up the exhaust of the inactive motorists.
The participants varied greatly. They demonstrated that life without
fossil fuels is better, even if it is only possible at present for one
day of the year.
