Le terme d’« altermondialisme » – d’un usage très fréquent – recouvre
des réalités très différentes d’un pays à un autre. Tandis que dans
les pays européens, il est davantage lié à la lutte contre le
néolibéralisme, dans certains pays du Sud de la Méditerranée, il
reflète une forme de contestation des fondements du champ politique.
Mais, dans tous les cas, on constate une prétention à l’universalité :
ses protagonistes se proclament défenseurs des droits humains, de la
paix dans le monde et de la justice globale. Certains points de
divergences se retrouvent également de pays en pays. Le rapport entre
le local et le global, le rôle de la religion, l’identité collective
transnationale, les relations dichotomiques entre les militants du «
Nord » et ceux du « Sud », la crise de la « gauche » constituent en
effet des sujets de controverses à l’intérieur même de ces mouvements.
Or, après avoir tenu une place importante dans la recherche,
l’altermondialisme semble ne plus représenter un sujet crucial dans
l’analyse sociologique, et lorsqu’il est traité, ce n’est que sous
l’angle des pays du Nord, dits « développés ». Quels sont les logiques
et les enjeux de cet "oubli" ? Que peuvent nous apprendre les
mouvements sociaux des pays du Sud ?
The notion of 'alter-globalization', despite being of a frequent use,
comprises very different realities from one country to the other.
While in European countries, it is linked with the struggle against
neo-liberalism, in some countries of the Southern Mediterranean, it
reflects a form of contestation of the foundations of the political
field. In all cases, however, it is underpinned by a universalist
claim: its various protagonists claim for themselves a role as
advocates of human rights, world peace and global justice. Some common
points of divergence can also be singled out from country to country.
The relationship between the local and the global, the role of
religion, collective transnational identity, the dichotomic relations
between activists from the 'North' and those from the 'South', the
crisis of the 'left', all indeed constitute controversial topics
within these movements. Nonetheless, and after enjoying an important
position in scholarship, alter-globalization seems to have lost some
of its centrality in sociological investigations, and, when it is
addressed, it seems to be dealt with only from the viewpoint of
'Northern' and allegedly 'developed' countries. What are the logics
and the stakes of this neglect? What can the social movements of the
'South' tell us?
