Dear list members,
We would like to bring to your attention a situation which has developed
out of the arrest of a University of Nottingham administrator and a
masters student at the University, who is completing a dissertation on
global terrorism in the School of Politics and International Relations.
The arrests were connected to the possession of sensitive but legitimate
research material.
The problem arose because the university administrator, Hicham Yezza,
thoughtlessly printed out some material relating to Al-Qaeda training
procedures for his friend, who could not afford to print it himself. It
has now emerged that the material was downloaded from a U.S. government
website and is also available on Amazon.com.
A university employee came across the material and notified senior
management, who then reported it to the police. Both individuals were
arrested under terrorism legislation and held for six days. Whilst both
were released without charge, Hicham was immediately rearrested due to
irregularities in his immigration papers and is due to be deported as an
emergency case to Algeria on, we believe, June 1st. Hicham is originally
from Algeria but has been in the UK for the past 13 years.
A website has been launched at which people can demonstrate their support
for the petition which, as well as defending Hicham's reputation, requests
the UK Home Office to:
* "Respect Hicham's fundamental human right to due process and a proper
chance to make his case, before a court of law in a fair and timely
manner.
* "Intervene to stop his hurried, unjust, imminent deportation"
