Re-Mapping Cities: Gendered Performances of Urban
Lives

V.G. Julie Rajan and Caterina Romeo, eds.

Transnational movements and migrations have
increasingly renegotiated
notions of national territory and migrant identity.
In some contexts,
nations have represented migrants as enemies of
national identity in
the
attempt to subdue the nationalistic anxiety that has
arisen from the
presumed necessity to protect a territory. In turn,
migrants have
resisted
that marginalization and have imposed new
cartographies onto the
territories
they have come to inhabit.

This collection particularly explores how the
phenomenon of women's
migration to urban centers has renegotiated
traditional social,
economic,
and cultural assumptions of the city in various
national contexts, and
how
in turn, that migration has redefined migrant women
themselves in
contemporary contexts. The collection considers both
women's migration
from
marginalized racial or ethnic groups as well as intra-
and
international
migration.

We are looking for papers that broadly reflect on this
theme. Topics
may
include, but are not limited to:

- Articulation of power relations in urban
spaces, including
class/race/ethnicity differentiation among migrant
women

- Economic exploitation and domestic work,
including sweatshops
and
the capitalistic model of microcredit enterprises

- Violent performances, including women's
associations with
terrorism and right-wing movements

- New representations of urban spaces, center
and periphery,
cities
as sites of multiplication of differences and/or as
sites of resistance
to
marginalization

- Sexual negotiations, including prostitution
and enforced
marriage/migration

- Representations of the urban, including food
cultures, street
art
and fairs, the cinema

Multiple perspectives and inter- and transdisciplinary
approaches are
welcome.

Please submit 500 to 1,000 word abstracts for
unpublished papers and a
biography of 500 words (or CV) for consideration to
both editors
electronically by April 30, 2007. We will notify
those whose papers
have
been selected for inclusion by the end of July 2007.

Completed manuscripts of 15-20 pages will be due by
December 1, 2007.
Tentative publication of the volume will be in the
Spring 2008.

Please feel free to address questions to the editors.
Your submissions
are
