Understanding Networks in Global Social Movements
09/16/06
This paper, written by Raffaele Marchetti e Mario Pianta, analyses
the major features of transnational networks in global social
movements. Contesting their interpretation as simple
internationalisation of domestic experiences, this paper identifies
the fundamental novelty of such networks with three key elements:
first, they constitute the backbone of a new political agency;second,
they show a degree of political maturation from local and national
protest to global proposal; and finally, they developed a specific
political skill in both challenging and implementing institutional
policy-making at the state and international level.
