resistenza; comunque li definiate, hanno i loro motivi per combattere
gli statunitensi in Iraq. Abu Ayoub, un trentacinquenne che vive a
Baghdad, è un membro dell’Esercito Islamico. Ha parlato nelle vicinanze
di Adhamiya delle ragioni per cui si è unito alla lotta.
“Quando le forze di occupazione hanno fatto ingresso a Baghdad, hanno
ucciso mio fratello di fronte a me. Era ferito e sanguinante, ma le
forze di occupazione non mi hanno permesso di salvarlo. Quando ho
provato a soccorrerlo hanno iniziato a spararmi, e dopo pochi minuti
mio fratello è morto. Dopo questo ho giurato di combatterli fino alla
morte”.
Molti gruppi della resistenza sono stati identificati sin dall’inizio
della guerra nel Marzo 2003. Abbiamo dal famoso Ansar Al Sunna,
inizialmente localizzato nel nord dell’Iraq dopo che i suoi membri
abbandonarono l’Afghanistan, a gruppi più piccoli come la Brigata
Vendetta, coinvolta nel rapimento di Jill Carroll, corrispondente del
“Christian Science Monitor”.
“Credo che l’80% dei gruppi provenga dalla Resistenza Islamica, poiché
l’Islam prescrive ai Musulmani di combattere contro i nemici e contro
chiunque venga ad occupare la nostra terra”, ha detto Ayoub.
Dopo l’uccisione di suo fratello, degli amici si fecero avanti ad
aiutarlo nella sua lotta di resistenza, ha detto. “All’inizio
combattevo in un piccolo gruppo, perché non credevamo che molte persone
si unissero a noi. Ma ora, dopo tre anni di combattimento, siamo
diventati parte dell’Esercito Islamico. Ora ogni cosa viene pianificata
– prepariamo validi piani prima di ogni attacco”.
Ci sono alcuni gruppi, sia sunniti che sciiti, che credono che sia
passato il tempo della resistenza violenta, ha detto Ayoub. Gruppi
sunniti come il Fronte Iracheno dell’Accordo, il Partito Iracheno
Islamico e l’Associazione degli Studiosi Musulmani sembrano premere per
un processo politico, ed hanno partecipato alle elezioni del Dicembre
scorso.
Ma l’Esercito Islamico non negozierà mai con gli Stati Uniti od il
governo Iracheno, ha detto Abu Ayoub. Crede che i negoziatori con la
coalizione e con il governo Iracheno siano solo combattenti della
resistenza ba’athista. “La resistenza ba’athista combatte per Saddam,
non per l’Islam o per l’Iraq. Noi siamo contro questo. Loro non sono
rappresentativi della resistenza Irachena”.
Abu Ayoub crede che l’occupazione non potrà essere conclusa né con un
processo politico né con altri mezzi pacifici. Solo il ritorno al
combattimento degli Iracheni può liberare l’Iraq, ha detto. “Le forze
di occupazione scopriranno che dopo questi negoziati non sarà cambiato
nulla. La resistenza continuerà a crescere fino alla fine dell’
occupazione. Sono venuti con la forza, e non se ne andranno via se non
con la forza.
Ayoub ha detto che non gli è concesso dire come si è unito all’
Esercito Islamico. Ma ha voluto dire qualcosa sulla sua organizzazione.
“L’Esercito Islamico è molto esteso, e combattiamo in tutto l’Iraq.
Abbiamo cellule ovunque in Iraq, ma io non ho collegamenti con altre
cellule. Solo i nostri comandanti hanno legami con ognuna; questo per
la nostra sicurezza”.
Abu Ayoub ha detto che dopo essersi unito all’Esercito Islamico è
stato molto più semplice ricevere sostegno come pistole. Ha detto che
ci sono “persone speciali” il cui compito è rifornire di armi. Il suo
compito è usarle per combattere i nemici, ha detto.
Alla domanda del perché stesse combattendo le forze statunitensi, ha
detto: “Dovreste fare questa domanda a loro, non a me. Sono loro che
sono venuti qui dall’altra parte del mondo ed hanno attraversato l’
oceano per occupare il mio paese. Bush e Blair hanno mentito a tutto il
mondo quando parlavano di armi di distruzione di massa. Tutto il mondo
sapeva bene che i loro governi stavano mentendo, ma nessun paese ha
detto “no”. La maggior parte del mondo li ha aiutati ad occupare il mio
paese”.
Ayoub ha respinto le pretese del presidente statunitense George W.
Bush – pappagallescamente ripetute dal Primo Ministro Britannico Tony
Blair, che il loro scopo in Iraq fosse quello di stabilire la
democrazia e liberare il popolo Iracheno.
“Non hanno alcuna credibilità. Sono venuti in Iraq per molte ragioni:
distruggere l’Islam, rubare il petrolio, salvare il fronte orientale di
Israele, avere il controllo del Medio Oriente e stabilire basi vicino
all’Iran e alla Russia. Voglio chiedere loro: “dov’è la democrazia?”
Tre anni di occupazione e le condizioni dell’Iraq sono passate di male
in peggio”.
Ayoub non è arrabbiato solo con le forze della coalizione. Crede che
sia sbagliato per gli Iracheni unirsi al nuovo esercito o alla polizia.
“Non sono un vero esercito come lo era l’esercito iracheno prima dell’
occupazione. Le forze di occupazione hanno costruito questo nuovo
esercito per proteggersi dalla resistenza. Io credo che ogni Iracheno
onesto non dovrebbe unirsi a questo falso esercito”.
L’esercito sta agendo contro il popolo, ha detto. “Basti vedere cos’
hanno fatto a Fallujah. Erano come un braccio dell’occupazione. Hanno
ucciso molte persone innocenti lì, e hanno fatto lo stesso in molte
altre città il Iraq, come Ramadi, Tal Afar, Hit, Rawa e Haditha. Andate
lì a vedere quanti bambini, anziani e donne sono stati uccisi per mano
dell’esercito Iracheno”.
Abu Ayoub crede che la polizia dovrebbe essere chiamata una milizia.
“Il 95% di loro sono sciiti e lavorano con la milizia Badr, per gli
interessi dell’Iran. Hanno ucciso molti sunniti solo perché erano tali,
per creare tensioni tra sunniti e sciiti, e provocare una guerra
civile”.
Ma Ayoub crede che tuttavia non sia giusto attaccare membri dell’
esercito Iracheno e della polizia. “Prima dobbiamo liberarel’Iraq dalle
forze di occupazione, e poi potremo giudicare ognuno di coloro che hano
commesso dei crimini.
Non ci sarà guerra civile in Iraq se gli occupanti si ritirano, ha
detto Abu Ayoub. “Controlleremo l’Iraq e cacceremo via tutte le milizie
ed i politici iracheni arrivati sui carri armati americani. Poi
troveremo molti politici onesti per governare l’Iraq. Ma per ora vedete
come il popolo Iracheno sia tra l’“incudine” dell’occupazione e il
“martello” delle milizie – o meglio del governo Iracheno, dato che le
supporta”.

The Iraqi resistance: 'Why we fight'

BAGHDAD - Call them terrorists, call them resistance fighters. By
whatever their name, they have their own reasons for fighting the
Americans in Iraq. Abu Ayoub, a 35-year-old living in Baghdad, is a
member of the Islamic Army. He spoke in the Adhamiya neighborhood about
why he joined the fight.
"When the occupation forces entered Baghdad, they killed my brother in
front of my eyes. He was wounded and bleeding but the occupation forces
didn't allow me to save him. When I tried to save him they began
shooting at me, and after a few minutes my brother died. After that I
swore to fight them to the death."
Many resistance groups have been identified since the beginning of the
war in March 2003. They range from the well-known Ansar al-Sunna, first
noticed in northern Iraq after its members fled Afghanistan, to smaller
groups such as the Revenge Brigade involved in the kidnapping of Jill
Carroll, correspondent with the Christian Science Monitor.
"I think 80% are from the Islamic resistance, because Islam orders
Muslims to fight against the enemy and against everyone who came to
occupy our country," Ayoub said.
After his brother was killed, friends just came up to support him in
his resistance fight, he said. "At first I was fighting in a small
group, because we didn't trust many people to join with us. But now,
after three years fighting, we became part of the Islamic Army. Now
everything has become organized - we make good plans before any
attack."
There are some groups, both Sunni and Shi'ite, who believe the time
for violent resistance had passed, Ayoub said. Sunni groups such as the
Iraqi Accordance Front, the Iraqi Islamic Party and the Muslim Scholars
Association seem to be pushing for a political process, and
participated in the December elections.
But the Islamic Army would never negotiate with the United States or
the Iraqi government, Abu Ayoub said. He believes negotiators with the
coalition and Iraqi government include only resistance fighters from
the Ba'ath Party. "The Ba'ath resistance fights for Saddam, not for
Islam or for Iraq. We are against this. They aren't representative of
the Iraqi resistance."
Abu Ayoub believes the occupation cannot be ended either by a
political process or by other peaceful means. Only Iraqis fighting back
can liberate Iraq, he said. "The occupation forces will discover after
this negotiation that nothing will change. The resistance will grow
more and more until the end of occupation. They came by force, and they
will never leave, except by force."
Ayoub said he was not allowed to say how he joined the Islamic Army.
But he was willing to say a little about his organization. "The Islamic
Army is very big, and we fight all over Iraq. We have groups everywhere
in Iraq, but I have no connection with other groups. Only our leaders
have connections between each other; this is for our security."
Abu Ayoub said that after he joined the Islamic Army it was much
easier to receive support such as guns. He said there are "special
people" whose work it is to supply weapons. His duty is to use them to
fight the enemy, he said.
When asked why he was fighting the US forces, he said: "I want you to
pose this question to the US forces, not to me. They came from the
other side of the world and crossed the ocean to occupy my country.
Bush and Blair lied to all the world when they spoke about weapons of
mass destruction. All the world knew very well their governments were
lying, but no country said 'no'. Most of the world supported them to
occupy my country."
Ayoub dismisses claims by US President George W Bush, closely parroted
by British Prime Minister Tony Blair, that their goal in Iraq is to
establish democracy and liberate the Iraqi people.
"They don't have credibility. They came to Iraq for many reasons: to
destroy Islam, steal oil, save the east front of Israel, control the
Middle East and establish bases near Iran and Russia. I want to ask
them, 'Where is the democracy?' Three years of occupation and the Iraqi
condition has gone from bad to worse."
Ayoub is not just angry with the coalition forces. He believes it was
wrong for Iraqis to join the new army or police force. "They are not a
real army like the Iraqi army before the occupation. The occupation
forces built this new army to protect them from resistance. I think any
honest Iraqi should not join this fake army."
The army is acting against the people, he said. "You can see what they
did in Fallujah. They were like a hand of the occupation. They killed
many innocent people there, and they did that in many other cities in
Iraq, like Ramadi, Tal Afar, Hit, Rawa and Haditha. Go there and see
how many children, old men and women were killed by the Iraqi army's
hand."
Abu Ayoub believes the police should be called a militia. "Ninety-five
percent of them are Shi'ite and work with the Badr militia, and they
work for Iran's benefit. They killed many Sunni people just because
they were Sunni, to create tensions between Sunni and Shi'ite, and to
make civil war."
But Ayoub believes it is still not right to attack members of the
Iraqi army and police. "First we must liberate Iraq from occupation
forces, and then we can judge each one of them who committed crimes."
There will be no civil war in Iraq if the occupation retreats, Abu
Ayoub said. "We will control Iraq and push out all the militias and
Iraqi politicians who came on American tanks. Then we will find many
honest Iraqi politicians to lead Iraq. But for now you can see how the
Iraqi people are between two hammers, the occupation and the militia -
or even the Iraqi government, because they support them."
