HK police arresting an activist On December 17 (yesterday) afternoon,
thousands of representatives from farmers, fishers, workers, migrants,
women's, students and other civil society organizations marched from
Victoria Park to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in a
demonstration to protest against the destructive policies of the World
Trade Organisation (WTO). At around 5.00 pm, they were stopped by the
police, who used pepper spray, water hoses and eventually, tear gas, to
disperse them. Many demonstrators were injured and some were
hospitalized.
After this, at least 900 demonstrators sat peacefully on Gloucester
Road, singing songs and dancing, but were surrounded on all sides by the
police in full riot gear for over ten hours. By 3.30 am this morning,
the police started to arrest the demonstrators and the arrests are
continuing into today. Reports from the legal support group and those
arrested reveal that those kept on Gloucester Road were not allowed
food, water and bathroom facilities; many were constrained in extremly
painful handcuffs and some were even strip-searched.
We, coming from organizations, social movements and networks from across
the world, denounce the actions of the police, and strongly protest
against the use of such excessive force against the demonstrators and
the inhuman treatment of those arrested. We stand in complete
solidarity with the demonstrators, who have been so deeply and
desperately impacted by the systemic violence of WTO policies.
We urge all members and delegates of the WTO to join us in calling for
the immediate release of these political prisoners.

Anoche, unos 3000 campesinos y campesinas no armados participaron junto
con sus aliados en una marcha organizada por La Via Campesina contra
la OMC. Nos paró la policía antidimotines de Hong Kong cuando intentamos
abrir las puertas de aislamiento detrás de las cuales los negociadores
de la OMC estan decidiendo nuestro destino. Nuestra marcha fue cortada
por la policia de Hong Kong, y hubo muchos heridos. Luego más de mil
campesinos hicieron una sentada de protesta y fueron completamente
cercados por la policia.
* Más de 500 campesinos de La Vía Campesina han sido detenidos.
* Entre los detenidos se encuentran líderes de La Vía Campesina y
miembros de La Vía Campesina de Corea, Indonesia, Tailándia, España y
Francia.
* Siguen detenidos, sin agua ni alimentos.
* 70 personas resultaron heridas, dos de ellas de gravedad.
La Via Campesina es una movimiento campesinos pacífico y no violento.
En la manifestación de ayer quisimos acercamos a la reunion de la OMC
para hacer llegar nuestro mensaje de desesperación y de nuestras
difíciles condiciones de vida. Cómo repuesta a nuestra oferta de diálogo
la OMC nos envió la policia. Nuestra unica arma en la manifestación ha
sido nuestro propio cuerpo.
* Responsalizamos directamente a Pascal Lamy de la OMC de este
atentado contra nuestros derechos y libertades. La OMC está
institucionalizando la violencia contra los campesinos. Sus políticas
causan destrucción y muerte en las comunidades rurales en el mundo entero.

otro fracaso mas.

Dans l'après-midi du 17 décembre, des milliers de représentants de
fermiers, pêcheurs, travailleurs, migrants, femmes, étudiants et
d'autres organisations issues de la société civile ont marché de
Victoria Park vers le Convention and Exhibition Center de Hong Kong,
dans une manifestation pour protester contre les politiques
destructrices de l'Organisation Mondiale du Commerce (OMC). A environ 17
heures, ils furent arrêtés par la police, qui utilisa des vaporisateurs
au poivre, des pompes à eau et parfois du gaz lacrymogène, pour les
disperser.
De nombreux manifestants furent blessés, et certains hospitalisés. Après
cela, au moins 900 manifestants se sont assis pacifiquement sur
Gloucester Road, en chantant et en dansant, mais encerclés par une
police en tenue complète pendant plus de dix heures. Vers 3 heures 30,
ce matin, la police a commencé à arrêter les manifestants et elle
continue encore aujourd'hui à le faire. Des rapports issus des groupes
de soutien légal ainsi que des personnes arrêtées révèlent que ceux qui
furent pris sur Gloucester Road n'eurent droit ni à de la nourriture, ni
à de l'eau, ni à des toilettes ; beaucoup d'entre eux furent menottés et
certains fouillés.
Nous, issus d'organisations, de mouvements sociaux et de réseaux partout
dans le monde, dénonçons les actions de la police, et protestons
fortement contre l'utilisation de telles mesures excessives contre les
manifestants, ainsi que contre le traitement inhumain de ceux qui ont
été arrêtés. Nous sommes en complète solidarité avec les manifestants,
qui ont été si profondément touchés par la violence systémique des
politiques de l'OMC.
Nous en appelons à tous les membres et toutes les délégations de l'OMC
pour qu'ils se joignent à nous dans notre appel à la libération
immédiate de ces prisonniers politiques.
