PROTEST
Voor een open en kritische UvA!
De Universiteit van Amsterdam nodigde Ayaan Hirsi Ali
uit als een van
de hoofdsprekers bij de opening van het Academisch
Jaar 2005-2006. In
de uitnodiging werd de politica als volgt omschreven:
"Ayaan Hirsi Ali
geniet wereldwijd erkenning voor haar strijd tegen de
onderdrukking
van moslimvrouwen." Wij vinden het merkwaardig dat het
College van
Bestuur een omstreden politica op deze manier
erkenning geeft. Een
groot aantal (moslim)studenten en medewerkers aan de
UvA voelt zich in
ieder geval door deze keuze niet gerepresenteerd.
In plaats van tegen de onderdrukking van moslimvrouwen
te vechten
motiveert Ayaan Hirsi Ali met haar woorden en daden
eerder een hetze
tegen de islam. Het is bovendien opvallend dat de
'brede' erkenning
met name komt van hoogopgeleide autochtone mannen en
vrouwen, die zich
voorheen niet met moslimvrouwen bemoeiden. Door over
de hoofden van
moslimvrouwen te praten, en niet met hen, draagt Hirsi
Ali bij tot
polarisatie in de Nederlandse samenleving. Bovendien
is zij lid van de
VVD, een partij die juist stelselmatig via
bezuinigingen op o.a.
opvanghuizen en het strenge terugkeerbeleid de
onafhankelijke positie
van allochtone vrouwen ondermijnt.
We vragen ons af wat voor signaal het College van
Bestuur met deze
gang van zaken heeft willen afgeven. De opening van
het academisch
jaar moet namelijk niet alleen gezien worden in een
academische
context, maar ook binnen de hedendaagse
sociaal-politieke
ontwikkelingen in Nederland. Het publiek debat wordt
helaas al
gedomineerd door neo-liberalen, sociaal darwinisten en
verlichtingsfundamentalisten. Welke boodschap heeft de
UvA af willen
geven door iemand onbetwist een platform te bieden
die, zoals
verwacht, beweert dat armoede een gevolg is van een
gebrek aan
nieuwsgierigheid, wat op haar beurt inherent is aan
bepaalde religies
en culturen? Neemt de UvA hiermee stelling en
ondersteunt zij daarmee
de inhoud van de speech van Hirsi Ali? Mogelijkheden
voor een open en
kritisch debat waren door de aanmeldings- en
programmastructuur helaas
niet aanwezig. Dit is in lijn met een steeds
commerciëlere en
mediabeluste ontwikkeling, waarbij de UvA haar
identiteit als
progressief en onafhankelijk instituut verliest.
Wij, allochtone en autochtone studenten, onderzoekers
en werknemers
van de UvA laten hiermee ons protest horen, en vragen
een ieder die
dit protest onderschrijft dit per mail kenbaar te
maken
(uvaprotest@???). Met deze handtekeningenactie
willen wij een
grote en tot nu toe onbekende groep mensen een gezicht
geven en
gezamenlijk een tegenwicht bieden om de UvA als
progressieve en
kritische instelling te herwinnen. Wij vinden het
hoog tijd voor een
stevig debat over bovenstaande ontwikkelingen en de
rol van de
universiteit daarin.

PROTEST
For an open and critical UvA!
The University of Amsterdam invited Ayaan Hirsi Ali as
one of the key
speakers for the opening of the Academic Year
2005-2006. In the
invitation, the politician was introduced as follows:
"Ayaan Hirsi Ali
is known worldwide for her struggle against the
suppression of Muslim
women." We find it disturbing that the University
board (CvB)
acknowledges such a controversial politician in this
manner. A great
number of (Muslim) students and faculty members of the
UvA do not feel
represented by this choice.
Rather than fighting against the suppression of Muslim
women, Hirsi
Ali's words and actions more clearly motivates a smear
campaign
against Islam. It is remarkable that the overall
appreciation stems
from well-educated "autochtonous" men and women who
have never before
involved themselves with the cause of Muslim women. By
talking for
them, rather than with them, Hirsi Ali contributes to
a polarisation
in Dutch society. Moreover, she is a member of the
VVD, a party that
systematically cuts in subsidies of crisis centres and
that supports a
rigorous policy of sending asylum seekers back "home",
thereby
undermining the position of so-called "allochtonous"
women.
We ask ourselves what kind of message the board of the
University
(CvB) is conveying with this course of action?
Namely, the opening of
the academic year should not only be placed within an
academic
context, but also within the landscape of contemporary
socio-political
developments in the Netherlands. Within this context,
neo-liberalism,
social Darwinism, and enlightenment fundamentalism,
unfortunately,
already dominate the public debate. What is the UvA
implying by
providing an unchallenged stage to someone who,
unsurprisingly,
asserts that poverty is a result of a lack of
curiosity, which in
turn, is inherent to certain religions and cultures?
Is this the
position of the UvA and does the UvA support the
content of Hirsi
Ali's speech? Due to the registration and programme
structure, an open
and critical debate was not possible. This makes
visible the choices
that the UvA is taking towards increasing
commercialization and media
exposure. A development leading the UvA to lose its
identity as a
progressive and independent institution.
With this, we - allochtonous and autochthonous
students, researchers,
and employees of the UvA - want to express our protest
and urge
everyone who supports this protest to register their
names by sending
an e-mail to uvaprotest@???. With these
signatures we want to
make visible the large, yet unknown, group of people
that can form a
counterbalance to re-gain the UvA as a progressive and
critical
institution. We think it is high time for a serious
debate about the
above-mentioned developments and the role of the
university therein.
