STUDIO XX presents

HTMlles Festival - 7th edition
peripheries + proximities

May 18 to 21, 2005

Montreal, January 6, 2005 - Studio XX is pleased to announce the 7th
edition of the HTMlles festival which will take place May 18th to 21st,
2005. This international electronic art event, under the theme
''peripheries + proximities'', will propose more than 50 works from around
the world. The Monument-National, a significant location in the history of
Quebec's women's movement, will host the majority of the HTMlles program
and be its main venue and meeting point.

Each edition of the HTMlles articulates its programming around a particular
theme which aliments discussion and reflection on the selected works and
proposed actions. ''peripheries + proximities'' will outline the conceptual
context for the 7th edition and will question technologies of proximities,
immateriality and the body, psychogeography and evolution within social
networks. Over fifty works exploring these subjects will be presented to
the public via performances, concerts, conferences, interactive
installations and workshops.

A highlight of the 2005 edition is the world premiere of the commission -
Immanence - created specifically for the HTMlles by Canadian artist Susan
Kozel, internationally renowned for her research in dance, philosophy and
new media. This performance incorporates differing technological
environments which permits the extension and renewal of the exploratory
potential of interactivity in dance.

The HTMlles present a unique occasion to share and explore the creative
possibilities of new media whilst privileging women's appropriation of
technology. The event affirms its singularity by highlighting original
works which find their meaning in the simultaneity and direct exchange
possible within networks. The success of past editions have witnessed the
dynamic development of the event and the relevancy of its approach within
technological arts. Initially committed to Web art, it has since widened
its sphere of proposed artistic practices, integrating forms such as
Webjams and interactive research. Far from succumbing to a policy of female
ghettoisation, the HTMlles reflects the diversity of current practices
advanced by women - solo or collaborative - and dismiss any prejudice of
exclusivity.

With works proposed by national and international artists within a
perspective of meetings and discussions, and through conferences which
raise issues related to contemporary practices, the festival has become a
key player in the development of the discipline. Over the years, the
HTMlles has welcomed renowned women artists from countries such as Russia,
South Korea, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, France, Finland
and the United States. Transformed into a biennal in 2003, the festival has
implemented a new policy of international circulation that consists of
off-setting the Montreal edition with a tour of the Quebecois and Canadian
aspects of its programming. The 6th edition traveled to Brussels and Berlin
during the winter of 2004. Several projects are currently being developed
for the international tour of the 7th edition, to take place in 2006.

The HTMlles festival is presented by Studio XX, a resource centre for
digital technology founded in Montreal in 1996. Developed by and for women,
it intervenes in a creative and positive manner in the field of new media.
Part of its mandate privileges the creation and dissemination of digital
and sound artworks by women.
