Great Jamahiriya/ Italy talks

A round of talks was convened Saturday evening between Great
Jamahiriya and Italy to develop their cooperation in security fields,
in the presence of the Secretary of the General People's Committee
for Public Security, and the Italian Minister of Interior, Giuseppe
Pisanu.

The talks were attended by the Undersecretary, and assistant
undersecretary at the General People's Committee for Public Security,
directors of the departments at the Committee, as well as several
experts and specialists from both countries, and the ambassador of
Italy to Great Jamahiriya.

The Secretary of the General People's Committee for Public Security,
welcomed during the inauguration of the talks the Italian Minister of
Interior and his accompanying delegation, underlining the importance
of the continuation of these meetings between the two countries, for
the development and consolidation of cooperation to address security
issues, of concern to the region particularly the illegal immigration
phenomenon, organized crime, and coordination on addressing these
issues between the two African and European Unions.

For his part, the Italian Minister of Interior expressed his
happiness and that of his accompanying delegation to visit Great
Jamahiriya and develop bilateral cooperation.

He underlined that Italy would contribute through its EU membership
to addressing these issues of concern to the region.

The round of talks focused on several issues related to enhancing
security performance, exchange of information, experiences, and
technical security equipment between the two countries.

The Great Jamahiriya and Italy / cooperation

The Secretary of the General People's Committee for Foreign Liaison
and International Co-operation met Sunday morning in Tripoli with the
Italian Minister of Interior, Giuseppe Pisanu, and his accompanying
delegation in the presence of the head of the Italian Affairs Desk at
the committee.

The meeting reviewed and discussed several issues related to
bolstering bilateral relations between the two countries especially
in security and fighting illegal immigration and organized crime.

During the meeting, they stressed the need to step up cooperation
between the two countries in fighting illegal immigration on the
bases of the role of Great Jamahiriya in the African Union and role
of Italy in the European Union.

They also agreed to address this phenomenon, thereby studying the
underling economic and social situations of the source countries and
setting up development projects in agriculture, water resources
development, investment of important rivers and constructing roads
between the north and south of the African countries and to ensure
the settlement of immigrants in their own countries.

During the meeting implementation mechanism of the points spelled out
in the joint Libyan-Italian declaration and the necessity to take
active steps on this matter and lay down programmes to implement
these steps were discussed.

A memorandum was singed in Tripoli Sunday evening by Great Jamahiriya
and Italy to develop and promote cooperation in security fields.

The memorandum agreement singed by the Secretary of the General
Peoples Committee for Public Security and by the Italian Minister of
Interior,Giuseppe Pisanu underlined the results achived so far in
security cooperation especially in the field of fighting illegal
immigration, exchange of information and experiences , security and
technical equipment.

According to the memorandum, Great Jamahiriya and Italy agreed to
double their efforts to develop cooperation between AU and EU on the
issues of common security to serve the common interest of the two
Unions.
