Conference Theme
The Center for the Study of Race, Politics and
Culture
at the University of Chicago will host a national
conference on the topic of hip hop and
feminism. The conference will provide a forum for
scholars, students, artists, activists, community
members, and members of the media interested
in analyzing the relevancy of feminist agendas to
the
hip hop generation. The event will highlight the
work
of scholars, activists, and artists across the
country
who are fighting for progressive representations of
women in hip hop culture as they reshape feminist
discourse and politics.

The Center for the Study of Race, Politics and
Culture
at the University of Chicago will host a national
conference on the topic of hip hop and
feminism. The conference will provide a forum for
scholars, students, artists, activists, community
members, and members of the media interested
in analyzing the relevancy of feminist agendas to
the
hip hop generation. The event will highlight the
work
of scholars, activists, and artists across the
country
who are fighting for progressive
representations of women in hip hop culture as they
reshape feminist discourse and politics.
A segment of this conference has been designed to
feature the work of 9-12 graduate students whose
work
is directly related to the conference theme of
feminism and hip hop. Attending to the social,
political and cultural forces that affect feminism
and
hip hop such as oral and visual media,
religion, sexuality, activism, education, and
language, we expect thatthese papers will
appropriately engage and challenge prior
scholarship
and most importantly, represent the future
direction
of hip hop and feminist studies. Graduate student
panels will be held on Friday, April 8th in
the morning.
Interested graduate students should submit an
abstract
and bio. Abstracts must be 500 words or less, and
they should include the title of the
paper, a brief bio and description of your current
work and interests in graduate school, and contact
information (name, institutional affiliation,
department, year in graduate school, and e-mail
address). All abstracts should be submitted as a
Microsoft Word document that includes
double-spacing,
12 point Times New Roman font, and a header with
your
name and page numbers. Conference presentations
will
be approximately 20 minutes.
