> Tsunami: e i bambini dell'Iraq?
> (Jack Dalton, Peacelink)
>

Dove erano finiti allora i cosiddetti
"conservatori compassionevoli" degli Stati Uniti? Oops! L'avevo dimenticato

casi di cancro stanno rapidamente aumentando, specialmente i tumori al seno,
l'inquinamento radioattivo è diffuso...

> George Walker Bush's Willing Executioners
> (Les Blough, Editor, Axis of Logic)
>
> ... The U.S. has lost the war in terms of military strategy and in terms

of their propaganda efforts both within and without Iraq. Most people of the
world agree that it was wrong for the U.S. to commit the atrocious,
unprovoked attack on the Iraqi people (...) Where does all this leave us?
As editors of Axis of Logic who report daily on the war on Iraq, let there
be no confusion: We stand - openly - and "shoulder-to-shoulder" with the
Iraqi resistance who are doing no less than we would do if we in the
U.S. were invaded by a foreign nation. Our position is based on principle:
The right to for any nation to defend their national boundries and
sovereignty against invasion and occupation - on the principles of the right
to independence and the right to national self-determination.

> JANUARY 20th -- WORLDWIDE DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST OCCUPATION AND WAR IN

IRAQ, ON THE DAY OF BUSH'S INAUGURATION
> (International Action Center)
>
> The world-wide antiwar movement has called for massive demonstrations

against the war on the weekend on March 19-20, 2005-- the second anniversary
of the invasion of Iraq. We have a responsibility to respond with renewed
determination and commitment in the face of the Bush Administration's
launching of a new phase of the war against the Iraqi people (...) In just a
few weeks, there will an opportunity to mobilize large numbers of people
for a visible show of opposition to the war and to the other anti-people
policies of the Bush administration. On Thursday, January 20, 2005, Bush's
inauguration will be the date of demonstrations around the world...

interesting article by Sara Solovitch reporting her discovery that Jumana
Hanna's accounts of rape and torture at the hands of Uday Hussein don't
appear to have the intimate connection to reality trumpeted by the Bush
Administration and by such reporters as Peter Finn of the Washington Post,
who promoted her in the Post in July of 2003 (...) Uday's chipper, whose
origin can probably be traced to a scene in the movie Fargo, just
didn't pass muster, same as the incubator story from the first Gulf War,
first identified in this column as intrinsically preposterous...

> Iraq elections loom as debacle for US occupation
> (James Cogan, WSWS)
>
> The elections in occupied Iraq, scheduled to take place on January 30, are

looming as a political debacle for the Bush administration. (...)
Washington's ambition is to produce a puppet government with enough domestic
and international legitimacy to be able to sign off on the real aims of the
March 2003 invasion of Iraq. These include the establishment of long-term
military bases in the Iraq, from which the US can exert strategic hegemony
over the Middle East, and the sale to American corporate interests of Iraq's
state-owned oil industry-which controls the world's second-largest oil
reserves.

the US mission in Iraq would require 500,000 troops, $500bn and a return of
the draft
> (Rupert Cornwell - Independent)

> ...Equally gloomy was Zbigniew Brzezinski, national security adviser under

President Jimmy Carter. "If [the US mission] cannot be changed drastically,
it should be terminated," he warned at the same meeting addressed by Mr
Scowcroft. It would require 500,000 troops, $500bn and a return of the
draft. The Pentagon is already starting to reshape its $400bn budget to cope
with the new demands...

evangelicals supporting Republicans have completely changed. There were
bishops who refused to give communion to Kerry. At the same time, a growing
number of Catholics made common cause with the evangelicals, in support of

security ahead of the 30 January elections. The Sunday Telegraph newspaper
said the troops would be based in British-controlled areas in southern Iraq
but could also be moved to more dangerous areas nearer Baghdad if Prime

in northern Iraq hit the wrong target and it "deeply regrets the loss of
possibly innocent lives". The bomb destroyed a villa in the village of

died.A US military statement said an F-16 fighter plane had dropped a

created by bales of concertina wire. At the end of the line, a U.S. soldier
sat at a table with an interpreter and asked people for name and marital
status, then took all 10 fingerprints. They also were told to look into a

> Report paints bleak picture of Iraqi forces
> (Bryan Bender, Globe Staff)
>
> The State Department's quarterly report to Congress paints a bleak picture

of Iraqi security forces in the run-up to this month's election, and Bush
administration officials and specialists now acknowledge it could take years
to prepare viable police and military units unless the current training
program improves dramatically. In some of the most violent areas of the
country, Iraqi forces have been ''rendered ineffective," the State
Department wrote in the report dated Jan. 5. Due to intimidation and attacks
by insurgents, ''large numbers" of police, highway patrol, and border
enforcement personnel ''have quit or abandoned their stations," it said...

>
> ... Now, Newsweek has learned, the Pentagon is intensively debating

an option that dates back to a still-secret strategy in the Reagan
administration's battle against the leftist guerrilla insurgency in El
Salvador in the early 1980s. Then, faced with a losing war against
Salvadoran rebels, the U.S. government funded or supported "nationalist"
forces that allegedly included so-called death squads directed to hunt down
and kill rebel leaders and sympathizers. Eventually the insurgency was
quelled, and many U.S. conservatives consider the policy to have been a
success-despite the deaths of innocent civilians and the subsequent
Iran-Contra arms-for-hostages scandal...
