TRANSIT MIGRATION

invites to

transnational europe I
migration across southern l eastern borders

International Symposium
University of Rethymno (Island of Crete)

21. - 24. 10. 2004

transnational europe I focuses on the formation of a
new Europe of
borders and
migrations.
This focus implies a shift in perspective: What is
usually considered
the
periphery of the
European Union - its southern and eastern fringes -
has become a center
of
transnational mobility,
a hot spot for the movements of migration and Europes
attempts to
control it.
The former regions
of recruited emigration to the North and West have now
become zones of
global
immigration and
transit. On the geopolitical map of western hegemony,
Europe is
becoming bigger:
by enlarging
and empowering it's border regime in the South and the
East. On the map
of
migration tactics and
imagination, however, Europe is down-sized and
de-centered by becoming
a
province of global
pathways expressing and demanding freedom.

transnational europe I invites researchers, activists,
and artists to
explore
and discuss
the formation and the non-/representation of this new
Europe as it
emerges from
the dynamic
interplay of borders and migration movements. What
does - and could -
Europe
look like from
such perspective?

TRANSIT MIGRATION

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

is a collaborative project of researchers, artists,
cultural producers,
film-makers,
political and media activists working on the current
dynamics of a new
Europe
emerging
from transnational migration movements across the
borders of the EU.
The
project
generates artistic productions, empirical research,
intellectual
networking and
debate.
The results from that collaborative work will be
presented and
discussed at two
international symposiums: <transnational europe I.
migration across
southern/eastern borders>,
October 21.-24. 2004, Rethymno (Crete/Greece) and
<transnational europe
II.

The project is hosted by the Institute of Cultural
