I am in San Francisco and following the news from NY with dismay, but
not much surprise. The tactics of the police are brutal and arbitrary,
what we begun to call the "Miami Model" after the FTAA protests there
last fall. But if you listen to democracynow.org, today's program (Mon.
Aug. 30) had a segment with Jeremy Scahill in which he gave a compelling
description of the battle between independent media activists and the
police, and how each side is using text messaging and wireless video to
move people around the city and confront the other side's tactics. Of
course the state/police have much more on their side, but it is great to
see how fast and well people are responding.... they say a half million
marched yesterday, after 5000 bicyclists on Friday night. I will forward
you right after this the written account by the same guy who just sent
me these photos of his arrest and detention for 30+ hours...
Give my best to everyone. I am planning to send a package, but I'm
waiting for two new books and a new magazine to come back from the
printers, so it will be October before I have it all assembled.
