Over 250 women to cycle from Beirut to Amman Jordan Times by Rami
Abdelrahman AMMAN - Over 250 women from across the world will participate
in a bicycle "march" from Beirut to Amman next month to raise awareness on
women's and children's rights in the Middle East. The organisers, Women for
Peace, said on Monday that participants from 25 countries, including
Jordan, will set off on bicycles from Beirut on April 18, passing through
Lebanese cities into Syria -where they will stop in Damascus - on their way
to Amman. At a meeting with Amman Mayor Nidal Haddid at Al Hussain Cultural
Centre yesterday, Sahar Al Fayez, vice president of the Woman for Peace
Society, said the participants were scheduled to arrive in Amman on April
23, one day ahead of the Women and Peace Convention. "We must utilise the
arrival of the participants in Jordan to deliver our national vision of
peace in the Middle East," Haddid said. He stressed that the participants
should find welcoming festivities along their route from the Syrian border
to Amman, where a celebration is planned at Al Hussain Cultural Centre. "We
should leave a good impression on participants by showing them Jordanian
hospitality, and convey the peaceful image of this march to the world," he
said, calling for extra effort to promote coverage of the event. Haddid,
who is also the president of the higher committee for the march, said
preparations were complete, including accommodation, visas, and
coordination with all interested parties.
