The year is 2004...
Hundreds of years of colonization, mass murder, assimilation, terror,
mis-education, church indoctrination and pain ingrained combined with
other forms of oppression have left many people of colour disassociated,
confused or conflicted about our sexualities, our desires, our erotics.
Collective struggles against the dominance overshadowing our lives often
force our curiosities about sex and sexuality on to the backburner.
=20
In our cultural communities of origin we may not feel comfortable or
open to exploring issues of a personal, sexual nature in more public,
heterosexual/conservative/sex negative/couple-oriented/marriage focused
forums/events.
=20
Due to ongoing legacies of racial domination, we may not necessarily see
our layered political/social/sexual/sensual realities reflected back to
us at events/gatherings/workshops in white dominated queer, s/m, fetish,
leather, poly, sexually radical communities where events may be
hosted/facilitated by friendly and well-meaning people who may not be
actively engaged in questioning their own white-skinned privilege.
=20
Loving Darkly, Loving More will be a group of 10-20 people of first
nations and/or of (diasporic) / (continental) african, (south)/(east)
asian, arab, middle eastern, latino, hispanic, chicano, jewish, pacific
islander, metis, mestiza, mixed race, biracial, mixed heritage descent
of all/any genders, sexualities and/or sexual persuasions committed to
remembering, creating, exploring our sexualities even as we expand our
relationship/sexual/sensual options.
             =20
Loving Darkly, Loving More will offer an opportunity to share writings,
readings and to discuss topics including but not limited to:
*    Erotophobia
*    non/monogamy
*    love not as a thing but as a committed course of action
*    family dynamics and value systems
*    cultural taboos
*    power and consent
*    marriage
*    compulsory heterosexuality
*    masculinity as a barrier to sexual exploration
*    coming out
*    conservatism
*    patriarchal control of wimmin
*    holocaust, genocide and survivor issues
*    sex negativity
*    negotiation, ethics and poly loving
*    s/m, leather and/or fetish curiosity
*    women=92s/queer/people of colour/sexual oppression
=20
all possible topics for discussion will involve ongoing explorations on
the theme of what it means to be =91of colour=92 and historically
sexual[ized] in a white dominated world as we attempt to incorporate an
analysis of the links between all forms of oppression including sexism
and patriarchy, racism, anti-semitism and white supremacy, imperialism
and colonialism, heterosexism and homophobia, gender oppression and
transphobia, conservatism and classism, linguistic oppression,
globalization, capitalism, consumerism, ableism, ageism, fatphobia and
lookism in our society.
=20
Loving Darkly, Loving More will offer a space for participants to
discover possibilities together and work toward building ethical
relationship options as we embrace more fluid ways of loving/lusting and
doing relationship consciously. =20
=20
this will be a non-judgmental, confidential, politically radical space
of transformation where attendees work on developing an in-depth
understanding of the role of social, sexual norms in their lives as they
move toward creating more emotionally healthy, exciting, thoughtful
relationship groupings.
=20
About the discussion facilitator:
T.J. Bryan aka Tenacious is 36 year old, deviant, capricornian,
Bajan-born, working class, dark daughta, out queer, femme and militant
mama who lives, loves, works and struggles here on first nations=92 =
land.
A radical third wave feminist and ethnical slut, T.J. is a
non-unionized, freelance, grassroots community worker who has been a
seeker, exploring her own sexualities, erotics and relationship options,
sharing her ideas and wisdom since she came out as a Black queer youth
14 years ago. A rogue scholar/theoretician and political mercenary T.J.
is an outspoken and uncontrollable lyric-smith whose work has been
published in Canada, the US and in Europe, including Canadian Woman
Studies, Fireweed, Fuse, Now Magazine, This Magazine, Tessera, Thamyris,
Mix Magazine and On Our Backs, to name a few. Her writings have been in
twelve (and counting) black/young women's/lesbian/queer/feminist/erotic
book length anthologies including Does Your Mama Know? (Redbone Press),
Maka =96 Diasporic Juks: Writings by Queers of African Descent (Sister
Vision Press), Queer View Mirror I&II (Arsenal Pulp Press), Hot &
Bothered I,II&III, Eye Wuz Here (Douglas & McIntyre), Turbo Chicks
(Sumach Press), Brazen Femme (Arsenal Pulp Press) and The Best of On Our
Backs (HAF Publishing).

*Sliding scale right down to $0 is available for those who are
systemically oppressed/dominated by class stratification and economic
hierarchies. This means that if you want to attend but you don=92t have
the money because of poverty, please still email. We can find a way to
make it work. For example, attempts will be made to establish
community-based partnerships between funded organizations and cash poor
community members interested in attending this series. This also means
that if you cannot [verrrry different than choose NOT to] afford to pay
fully or at all, you will still be admitted without shame, guilt, or the
usual trappings of class [un]consciousness. Most importantly this means
that if you know you can afford to pay the higher scale, please do so as
this will consciously support the attendance of those who may not have
otherwise been able to afford this type of learning situation.
=20
Please be aware that all R/evolution Workshops For Change events and
gatherings are intuitive, fluid spaces of deep exploration. To
participate fully means moving beyond intellectual posturing and all
things solely academic. R/evolution Workshops For Change events and
gatherings are not meant to be sites of crisis/trauma support. If you
are in crisis/trauma or have ongoing, unresolved issues related to past
trauma, please do a self-focused reality check; Is your present
emotional/psychological state such that deep thinking/talking may bring
up past/present issues of trauma [emotional/physical/ psychological]?
=20
If this is the case, please empower yourself and the organizer
proactively by sharing your present understanding of your issues and
fears before attending this or any R/evolution Workshops event. Please
reflect on whether an environment of critical, emotional, psychological,
political exploration will be right for you at this moment in time. This
is especially crucial if you at all have a history of being triggered by
particular sights, sounds, conversations or environments. In this way a
consensual experience structured around the safety of individual
participants, the needs of the group and the responsibilities of the
facilitator can be co-created in advance and consensually negotiated on
an individual as well as group basis.
