Background and Goals
What it will take to encourage more women to discover the freedom and
pleasures of two-wheeled transportation? At the June 2001 Cycling Sisters
Solidarity Forum bike commuters, advocates, racers, weekend warriors and
messengers addressed this question and concluded that there is NO GOOD
REASON for the gender cycling gap*.
We hope this website, the listserv, the monthly rides, and projects yet to
be conceived will help us reach the following goals by May, 2005:
Increase percentage of female bike commuters in Chicago to 50%
Decrease "maiden in distress" incidents by 50%
Quadruple options for finding functional yet stylish cycling clothes
Decrease frustration associated with finding an affordable bike that fits
by 80%
Decrease incidence of butt-pinching and "hey babying" by 100%
*We know that fewer women than men bike commute. Recent bike counts in
Chicago showed that 20-30% of cyclists were women. The people contributing
to this site think that's silly. We want more women and more people in
general to bike, especially as an alternative to driving . We approach this
challenge with an open mind. We do not presume that gender influences a
person's willingness to bike. We are simply curious about the imbalance and
hope that by exploring possible causes and offering tips, stories and
motivation that we can help rectify it.
