BOYS AND GIRLS
Zacheta National Gallery of Art, POLAND
17th February - 4th April 2004
Exhibition Opening: 16th February, 19.00
curator: Magda Kardasz
Art is one of the most individual human activities.
Paradoxically it can
also be created by a pair or a group of people who
manage to find a way to
produce a common work of art or artistic event. Over
recent years, a wave
of groups of women or girls working together has
emerged, reversing the
previous male dominance of this phenomenon. This
simple observation
triggered the idea for an exhibition that would be a
review of men's and
women's artistic groups, an exhibition that would pose
the question of the
similarities and differences of their approaches
towards art. A
significant part of this project will be the live
performances at the
opening night. Thirteen extremely interesting artistic
groups, invited for
this exhibition deal in a more or less direct way with
challenging
prevailing social cliches of thought on the theme of
"what is typically
female or male". The field of curatorial search for
participants was on
sample - the northern Europe. Therefore invited groups
come from Denmark,
Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Lithuania, Germany, Norway,
Poland and Russia
consist of young and very young artists whose work
constitutes a
commentary of the contemporary. Another factor linking
these groups is
sense of humour visible in their works and that their
favourite medium is
performance or simply - artistic action. The
exhibition "Boys and Girls"
however is not just recording of life events that will
be on view, but
also films, photographs and objects created by members
of the following
artistic groups:
1) Supergroup AZORRO: Oskar Dawicki, Igor Krenz,
Wojtek Niedzielko and
Lukasz Skapski (Poland)
2) BLIZGE: Zilvinas Landzbergas, Rokas Petruskevicius
and Mindaugas
