I found it much easier to read the new maintainer guide first:

I also use pbuilder, for the sole reason that i did not know about
sbuild. Ubuntu has a very good documentation on this tool:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PbuilderHowto They also document how to build
for Debian AND Ubuntu. Imho the most important thing is to have a good
building setup - that's half the work.

I have a lot of private notes about building packages / backports with
pbuilder, if anybody is interested, just send me an email and I can send
them to you. They're not in good enough shape to be published i believe.
