GUIDED TOUR van het Project Draadloos Oost
In een paar steden in Nederland zijn er gebieden waar de Wireless Fidelity
(wifi) radiogolven zich vrij verspreiden. Zo ook in Amsterdam Oost. Hier
staan ongeveer tien access points op daken; iedereen die een pc/laptop met
een wifi netwerkkaart heeft kan in deze buurt het internet op.
Om verschillende redenen zijn mensen met WLAN (wireless LANs) bezig. In
Amsterdam Oost streven ze o.a. naar social cohesie, door internet
toeganklijk te maken voor iedereen. In Leiden zou je kunnen zeggen dat
techies er mee bezig zijn omdat het nieuw is, leuk, interessant. En in een
provincie in Denemarken is het omdat de regering geen DSL lijnen wilde
neerleggen. Een groep is dus zelf aan de slag gegaan met antennas op
silo's, masten en huizen.
Tijdens de GUIDED TOUR hoor je van mensen die actief zijn in Oost over de
geschiedenis van het project, wat WLAN inhoud, lopen we langs de gebouwen
waar er acces points staan en gaan wij een dak op om naar een antenna te
kijken.
Deze tour is gratis en open voor iedereen.

GUIDED TOUR of the Draadloos Oost Project
In a number of Dutch cities the Wifi radio waves spread freely through the
ether. To the east of the Amsterdam city centre there are ten open access
points. Anyone with a pc/laptop and wifi network card can get onto the
internet in this vicinity.
There are different reasons for setting up WLANs (wireless LANs). In
Amsterdam one of the goals is social cohesion, internet connectivity for
the whole community. In Leiden one could say that the techies do it 'cos
its new, fun, interesting. And in a rural area in Denmark it was because
the government refused to lay DSL lines. So a group got together and built
a wireless network with antennas on silos, masts and houses.
During the GUIDED TOUR people that are active in this project will tell us
how it evolved, what WLAN is, take us on a walk around the buildings with
open access points and show us an antenna on a roof.
This tour is free and open to all interested.
