//2// "Cities and creative media"__ Unesco Digital Arts Award 2005

Call for participation: UNESCO Digital Arts Award 2005

Young artists from around the world are invited to take part in this
year¹s award devoted to the theme of "Cities and creative media". Organized
in collaboration with Art Center Nabi, the Award would be delivered to
non-realized project proposals in order to embrace a wider audience of
creators, who have the innovative artistic ideas but not necessarily
themeans.

The call specifically aims at encouraging young emerging artists to
cultivate new forms of expressions using new media and technology in
reflecting on how urban spaces and city environments could be
transformed into creative outlets.

The submission deadline is 14 September 2005. All project proposals
should be submitted online at the official website of submission
(http://www.nabi.or.kr/unesco_award), where participants will also be
able to find further detailed information (description of sub-themes,
general guidelines, submission criteria, etc). All submissions should be in
English.

The total prize money is US $10,000, which would be divided into and
given to more than one laureate, in some cases a group of artists. In
addition, the Nabi center (Seoul, Republic of Korea) is organizing a "special
honorary mention" category to the Award, targeting realized projects that could
be re-embodied within the urban context of the city Seoul.

The award-winning projects would be selected by an international jury,
assembled on this occasion representing the five geo-cultural regions
(Africa, Arab States, Asia/Pacific, Europe/North America, and Latin
America/Caribbean).

//3// 2nd International Video Reporting Award

CALL FOR ENTRIES !deadline 15th of September!
2nd International Video Reporting Award
www.videoreporter.org

The 2nd International Video Reporting Award is an international
competition specifically geared towards innovative documentary shorts
and non-fiction digital films helmed by a single autonomous author.

Video Reporting is the merge of cinematography, editing, sound and
directing in one single persons hand.
Film and television technicians adopt these digital documentary
techniques and regard the resultant new autonomous ways of production
as a challenge.

Not only will the jury and the preselection committee judge the idea
and conception of the film but they will also place great emphasis on the
way the filmmaker creatively dealt with the new digital authoring
principle.

Smaller cameras offer more freedom of movement and consequently often
lead to new perspectives and prospects differing from what you see on
television.
Additionally, commercial video editing software has achieved a level of
sophistication allowing for quick and playful experimentation with the
footage. The end results are journalistic films which inspire new boundaries in
the field of TV journalism.

We seek outstanding films that experiment with this new mode of
production and whose journalistic-cinematic narrative catches our
attention in form and content.

Furthermore the films should withstand traditional quality criteria and
simultaneously broaden the boundaries of mainstream television.

We are looking for documentary films and authentically narrated stories
captivating us with their particular intensity, an innovative
creativity and a very distinctive personal authoring style.

We also place a great deal of emphasis on the filmmakers fondness for
experimentation, however, keeping in mind the presented films should
not exceed 15 minutes and they should have been produced by one or more
Video Reporters/ Video Journalists.

The 2nd International Video Reporting Award is being borne by the
Bauhaus University Weimar as well as those television broadcast
stations that are already working together with Video Journalists large scale –
Hessischer Rundfunk, Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, Deutsche Welle TV .

The 2nd International Video Reporting Award is going to take place on
the 5. and 6. November in Weimar. It is being organised by the
professorship Medienereignisse of the media faculty of the Bauhaus
University Weimar.

Videoreporters, Video journalists, documentary filmmakers, program
managers, journalists and TV directors from all across Europe and the
USA will discuss the potential of video reporting/ video journalism in
contrast with mainstream television in public screenings, panels and
discussions.

The awards ceremony will take place on the 6. November 2005 in the “Mon
Ami” cinema and cultural centre in Weimar.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

INTERNATIONAL VIDEO REPORTING AWARD

Criteria: Documentary film of 15 minutes length at most, which has been
produced by one or more Video Journalists/ Video Reporters. Open
category.
Those films will be awarded that experiment with this new mode of
production and outstand by a journalistic – cinematic narrative in form
and content. The filmmaker’s fondness of experimentation is very
important to us.

GERMAN VIDEO JOURNALISM / VIDEO REPORTING AWARD
Criteria: Television documentary of 15 minutes length at most, which
has
been produced by one or more Video Journalists/ Videoreporters and
broadcasted by a German television broadcast station (please explicitly
state broadcast station and date of broadcasting). Those
journalistically as well as technically outstanding works will be
awarded that also meet the claims of mainstream television and show an
innovative and self-contained personal style.

VIDEO JOURNALISM/ VIDEO REPORTING TALENT AWARD

//6// The Art of the Overhead

The Art of the Overhead: Call for Overheads
30 Sept - 4 Oct 2005 Copenhagen, Denmark. www.overheads.org
Submission deadline August 25, 2005.

The Art of the Overhead is a small festival celebrating artistic
expression in a medium that is almost forgotten in the age of digital
reproduction: the overhead projector. Both an exhibition and a live
event, the project is a part of a series of events in Sweden and
Denmark by the EAT (Sweden) - Experiments in Art & Technology group.

Keynote speaker: Siegfried Zielinski, professor of Media Archaeology
and founding director of the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne.

We are calling for works that engage in the art of overhead
Presentation, Remediation, Illusion and Interaction.

The way that Microsoft's PowerPoint application owes its concept to the
Overhead is a schoolbook example of remediation. Yet, is it possible to
re-capture this "old" media through artistic interpretation in order
create something neither simply "new" nor nostalgic, but a medium for
telling meaningful stories today?

EAT - The Art of the Overhead calls for artists, designers, academics,
media professionals, business managers, culture producers, professional
presenters and storytellers of all kinds to contribute.

SUGGESTED THEMES AND KEYWORDS
PRESENTATION
Keywords: bullet-lists, clip-arts, flow-charts, diagrams, statistics,
formulas, to the point, results, conclusions, quotes.
INTERACTION
Keywords: games, fill in the blanks, hangman, labyrinths, insinuation.
REMEDIATION
Keywords: remixes, analogue/digital, old and new, media archaeology,
history, PowerPoint.
ILLUSION
Keywords: interference, optics, layers, patterns, overlays, traces,
double-vision, split-images, distortions, deformations.

You may submit a single or a series of overhead slides or send us
proposals for installations and performances that incorporate the
use of overhead projection.

Please send your overhead-contributions directly to:
The Art of the Overhead
Att: Kristoffer Gansing
K3 - School of Arts and Communication, Malmö University
205 06 Malmo
Sweden

OR e-mail proposals for installations and performances to
submit@???

If you are interested in presenting your submitted overhead live
during the event please state this. The location of the exhibition
and event will be Basement in Copenhagen (next to Vega concert
hall & night club).

Dates are set to September 30 - October 4, with special event and
party on the Saturday of October 1.

Submission deadline is 25th of August 2005.

See our website at www.overheads.org for full concept statement,
